CHEMICAL SENSING FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS: FROM A PROOF OF CONCEPT TO A MEDICAL DEVICE

Develop your knowledge on the development of a medical device based on chemical sensing at the ISOCS Short Course in Bormio, Italy

This Short Course will cover topics including:

  • Sampling, storage and analysis of biological fluids
  • Technological challenges and data processing related to multivariate chemical sensing
  • Scientific and clinical validation of biomedical technologies
  • Design of clinical validation trials
  • Certification of biomedical devices
  • Specific challenges related to healthcare applications (e.g., biocompatibility, cross contamination, etc.
  • Examples of technologies based on chemical sensing that became medical devices

Speakers include:

  • Prof. Laura Capelli, Politecnico di Milano, Italy
  • Prof. Raffaele Dellaca’, Politecnico di Milano, Italy
  • Dr. Chiara Veneroni, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The Short Course will cover theoretical and practical aspects of chemical sensing applied to the development of technologies for healthcare, including both chemical-analytical and e-nose approaches. Exercises and practical demonstrations on biomedical applications of chemical sensing will deliver unique hands-on experience.

Who should attend?

The Short Course is ideal for anyone with an interest in the use of chemical sensors or chemical analysis for the development of medical technologies and/or diagnostic devices, including PhD students, researchers, technologists and industrialists. This Shourt Course will focus specifically on all technological, clinical and regulatory aspects to be considered in order to turn a successful research project into a biomedical device.

The Short Course will cover theoretical and practical aspects of chemical sensing applied to the development of technologies for healthcare, including both chemical-analytical and e-nose approaches. Exercises and practical demonstrations on biomedical applications of chemical sensing will deliver unique hands-on experience.

The Short Course explores the areas of chemical sensing (including chemical analysis and e-nose approaches) and relevant data processing applied to the development of biomedical technologies and/or diagnostic devices, focusing specifically on the technological, clinical and regulatory/certification aspects to be considered when developing a proof of concept (TRL 3) or laboratory-validated methodology (TRL 4) towards a medical device.

We put together a unique and exciting program that will provide attendees with both theoretical background and practical experience in the above areas. Topics will be delivered by lectures, discussion, practical demonstration sessions and hands-on activities. The Short Course will include a team project activity during which the participants will be challenged to define how they should approach the planning of activities for scientific and clinical validation of an innovative medical device based on chemical sensing, to make them facing with the topics presented during the course in a simulated real-case scenario. The results of the projects will be presented by each group on the last day of the course. Participants will need to bring their own laptops, but will be supplied with sample data and evaluation software. The computing laboratories do not need a high-performance computer and can be carried out on a basic laptop running the windows operating system.

The Short Course is residential and the programme allows plenty of opportunites for networking with lecturers and attendees. Theoretical lectures will start on Monday 15th and take place in the morning, with the afternoon free for participants to network, consolidate their knowledge while enjoying the outdoors and the skiing. Practical sessions, exercises, hands-on demonstrations will be in the early evening, before dinner. The venue is the superb Hotel Vallechiara, located directly at the ski slopes, and the participation fees (to be communicated soon) include accommodation and meals. Participants will receive free ISOCS membership for 2024. Accompanying persons are also welcome.
The hotel has also a ski school (Anzi Ski School) and a ski rental, and they will organize ski courses at different levels (from beginners to experts) for the Short Course attendees.

Registration is now open and tickets for the event covering access and accommodation with 3 meals per day from Sunday 14th to Friday 19th (5 nights) can directly be purchased. Please fill in the questionaire that helps us with the organization of the event.

We will organize shuttle busses from and to Milano Malpensa airport. Cost and schedule of busses will be confirmed later.

There are only a very limited number of single rooms available, as they will be double rooms for single use. Shared multiple typically consist of 2 bed rooms that share one bath room.
