We aim to bring together academia and industry and help the latter identify which of the new developments are the most relevant to it. Now\, after decades of R&D effort\, we see that gas sensors are used in a host of applications\, that companies are commercializing millions of devices each year and that the number of related publications is increasing. But there is also the feeling that many fundamental issues are still poorly understood and that we need breakthroughs in both technology and basic understanding to be able to bring about new advancements in the field. After very much looking to technological aspects in the third workshop\, we feel that there is now the right time to have a look at the advancements in the basic understanding of sensing and to new application fields. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will start on the 6th of June\, in the morning and will end in the evening of the 7th of June; the registration and a come together social event will take place on the 5th of June. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe workshop will take place in Tübingen\, Germany in the “Hotel Stadt Tübingen”. SUMMARY:IEEE World Conference on Computational Intelligence: Special Session on Artificial Olfaction and Touch
DESCRIPTION:World Conference on Computational Intelligence\, July 18-23\, Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona\, Barcelona\, Spain Related Conference: International Joint Conference on Neural Networks 2010Call for papers for Special Session: Computational Intelligence for Artificial Sensing: Olfaction and Touch \n\n\n\nScope:Recently there has been an renewed research activity in the field of biologically inspired computation for artificial sensing. While vision and hearing have received a great deal of attention in past decades\, in new wave of research is being devoted to olfaction and hearing. Both olfaction and touch rely on large sensor arrays and both have an important component on signal and data processing\, first in peripheral neural circuits and further on in higher cortical areas. On the other hand\, while in vision and audition stimuli can be systematically varied by frequency; there is not an equivalent metric for olfaction. The relationship between odour and structure is hardly understood.Artificial Olfaction Systems combine an array of chemical sensors with partial specificity with pattern recognition systems for complex odour detection and identification. While the concept is more than 30 years old\, most of the attention has been devoted to chemical sensor technology. Since the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for Linda Buck and Richard Axel in 2004 for their discoveries of odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system\, the research link to biology and to the psychophysics of olfaction has been strengthened. In this sense\, the field of computational intelligence for artificial sensing is growing fast. The new trend is not just to build computational neuroscience models of olfaction and touch\, but to construct engineered artefacts where the operation of those models can be tested and validated. However\, this path is just starting. The aim of the special session is to present latest’s advances in computational intelligence for Artificial Olfaction and Touch. The session will mainly focus on biologically inspired algorithms\, although statistical learning techniques are also considered.  \n\n\n\nTopics: We encourage submissions addressing the following issues: \n\n\n\n–          Large sensor arrays: chemical and mechanical \n\n\n\n–          Sensor diversity and redundancy \n\n\n\n–          Noise reduction techniques \n\n\n\n–          Computational models of olfaction and touch \n\n\n\n–          Computational Intelligence Techniques applied to Olfaction and Tactile Data \n\n\n\n–          Analysis of biological data with computational intelligence tools. \n\n\n\n–          Psychophysics of Touch and Olfaction: Scenarios for algorithm testing. \n\n\n\n–          Benchmarking of Artificial Sensing Systems \n\n\n\n–          Robots with Olfactory/Tactile capabilities. \n\n\n\n–          Active Chemical/Mechanical Sensing \n\n\n\n–          Embedded algorithmic implementation for real-time operation. \n\n\n\nPaper submissionAll instructions and templates for submission can be found in the WCCI’10 web site (http://www.wcci2010.org/submission). PAT has been the enabling tool to implement Quality by Design (QbD) as a way to achieve Process Understanding. Recent advances in analytical and sampling technology have continued to improve measurement capabilities. \n\n\n\nNew technology for micro-machining\, along with new material development\, has allowed for advances in the miniaturization of instrumentation and sampling systems. A good example of this is in the development of the New Sensor and Sampling System (NeSSI)\, growing out of the forum created by the Center for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC) in the USA. This has enabled developments in operational devices such as micro-reaction equipment for process optimization and new micro-analytical tools for characterizing process samples. \n\n\n\nIMTeC will be a venue to describe to European companies the use of NeSSI and related analytical devices as valuable tools to consider in achieving the ultimate goal of Process Understanding\, the key to achieving improved productivity and quality in products via effective implementation of process control. \n\n\n\nIMTeC will cover:\n\n\n\nMicro Technology and the LaboratoryAnalyzer sampling system\, components\, and diagnosticNeSSI componentsProcess Automation Technology\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDownload the program

SUMMARY:EC Workshop on Infochemical Communication Technology
DESCRIPTION:This workshop brings together researchers interested in the fields of molecular interaction & chemical communication at different levels of organisation in both biological and technological systems\, i.e the development of new infochemical communication technologies. \n\n\n\nWe will consider the infochemical communication problem in two stages\, within both biological and technological domains – generating precisely controlled infochemical signals and the complementary detection problem of recovering chemical information in a receiver. Animal models\, particularly from the insect kingdom\, are ideal for this purpose since known pheromones mediate behaviours that are often robustly reproducible\, many of the biosynthesis steps are understood\, the molecular biology of the complementary receptors have been characterised and the neuroscience of pheromone processing in insects has been widely studied. \n\n\n\nA key aim of the workshop is therefore to identify potential routes from our knowledge of biological chemical communication through to technological implementation. \n\n\n\nRegister now! Limited places available only! \n\n\n\nFor a full programme and conditions visit http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/eng/eed/research/ichem/ \n\n\n\n\nDownload the flyer
