SUMMARY:International School of Physics and Technology of Matter
DESCRIPTION:Towards new frontiers of Smart Sensing and Integration: Materials\, Technologies and Applications \n\n\n\nSmart Sensing and Smart Systems Integration are currently witnessing a tremendous boost which arises both from the need for better understanding of fundamental phenomena and from the quest of applications in emerging and future technologies\, where products will incorporate functions of sensing\, actuation and control and will be capable of describing and analyzing a situation\, and taking decisions based on the available data in a predictive or adaptive manner\, thereby performing smart actions. In most cases the “smartness” of the system can be attributed to autonomous operation based on closed loop control\, energy efficiency and networking capabilities. \n\n\n\nSmart Sensing and Smart Integration combine materials\, technologies and components from Microsystems technology (miniaturized electric\, mechanical\, optical and fluidic devices) with knowledge\, technology and functionality from other disciplines like physics\, biology\, chemistry\, nano-sciences or cognitive sciences. Then integration of micro- and nano-technologies along the line connecting the nano-\, micro- and macro-worlds is the future of technology with a clear convergence towards Micro/Nano/Bio/ICT and with real applications into an industrial context when emphasizing the combination of components with the aim of merging their functional and technical abilities into an interoperable system. \n\n\n\nThe School is thought to give a perspective on some of both fundamental and new frontiers activities in the fields of materials science\, technological processes\, sensors and devices\, industrial applications with an emphasis on their connections. The consequences and impact of sensing and integration will be analyzed in several different contexts. \n\n\n\nAIMS OF THE SCHOOL ARE:\n\n\n\n(1) To broaden and deepen the background knowledge of young researchers\, early-career scientists\, PhD students and post-docs\, in the general areas of materials\, sensors and multifunctional devices\, transduction methods\, micro/nano technologies\, miniaturization and functionalization\,  advanced processing and packaging\, wereable and portable devices\, applications\, etc.\, through a series of advanced lectures given by well recognized experts in these fields. \n\n\n\n(2) To provide a perspective of the latest research and new frontier trends in these areas. \n\n\n\nThe schedule of the School is intensive with a rich program including formal lectures and discussion sessions\, including a session for young researchers poster presentation. Some social events will help to create a stimulating and friendly atmosphere for interaction and learning. The daily program typically runs from 09.00-13.00 and from 17.00-20.00\, with afternoon sessions being a combination of non-lecture activities\, seminars and poster discussions.

SUMMARY:1st International Workshop on Odor Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Chemical Space – Sensory Space – Perceptual Space – Artificial Olfaction\n\n\n\n4-7 September 2013 – Herrenhausen Palace\, Hannover\, Germany\n\n\n\nThe sense of smell plays an important role in everyday life\, for example in food\, beverages\, perfume and hygiene. For many animals the sense of smell is their primary sense to experience their world. But still\, we have no clear understanding of how odors are perceived. Moreover\, while we readily understand how to describe visual stimuli with light wavelengths and contrast\, or sounds with frequency and amplitude\, we lack understanding of the fundamental features of odors. In other words\, we don’t understand Odor Space. The notion odor space describes different aspects of the sense of smell. There is chemical space\, in which odorants (chemicals that evoke an odor) are arranged along their physico-chemical properties. The encoding of odors into neuronal responses defines the sensory space. The perceptual organization and meaning of odors is the basis for perception space. Finally\, odors are embedded in a physical space that governs how odorants move from their sources to our noses.Understanding how these aspects of odor space relate to each other is crucial to advance our knowledge on olfaction\, which is essential for research and development the food and perfume industry. Odor space knowledge is also key to developing artificial noses and prosthetics. Unraveling the meaning of odor space requires integrating many different disciplines all part of a rapidly growing research community\, including biochemistry\, molecular genetics\, neuroscience\, psychology\, physics\, engineering and computer science. The aim of the 1st International Workshop on Odorspaces is to bring together leading scientists and young researchers to jointly tackle the huge tasks to create a unifying perspective on Odor Spaces. We will mix data presentations by young researchers with big-picture accounts by senior experts in the field. A large part of the symposium is devoted to discussion to develop new and meaningful insights into the chemical sense. \n\n\n\nFurther information is available at: www.odorspaces2013.org

SUMMARY:IEEE World Conference on Computational Intelligence: Special Session on Artificial Olfaction and Touch
DESCRIPTION:World Conference on Computational Intelligence\, July 18-23\, Centre de Convencions Internacional de Barcelona\, Barcelona\, Spain Related Conference: International Joint Conference on Neural Networks 2010Call for papers for Special Session: Computational Intelligence for Artificial Sensing: Olfaction and Touch \n\n\n\nScope:Recently there has been an renewed research activity in the field of biologically inspired computation for artificial sensing. While vision and hearing have received a great deal of attention in past decades\, in new wave of research is being devoted to olfaction and hearing. Both olfaction and touch rely on large sensor arrays and both have an important component on signal and data processing\, first in peripheral neural circuits and further on in higher cortical areas. On the other hand\, while in vision and audition stimuli can be systematically varied by frequency; there is not an equivalent metric for olfaction. The relationship between odour and structure is hardly understood.Artificial Olfaction Systems combine an array of chemical sensors with partial specificity with pattern recognition systems for complex odour detection and identification. While the concept is more than 30 years old\, most of the attention has been devoted to chemical sensor technology. Since the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for Linda Buck and Richard Axel in 2004 for their discoveries of odorant receptors and the organization of the olfactory system\, the research link to biology and to the psychophysics of olfaction has been strengthened. In this sense\, the field of computational intelligence for artificial sensing is growing fast. The new trend is not just to build computational neuroscience models of olfaction and touch\, but to construct engineered artefacts where the operation of those models can be tested and validated. However\, this path is just starting. The aim of the special session is to present latest’s advances in computational intelligence for Artificial Olfaction and Touch. The session will mainly focus on biologically inspired algorithms\, although statistical learning techniques are also considered.  \n\n\n\nTopics: We encourage submissions addressing the following issues: \n\n\n\n–          Large sensor arrays: chemical and mechanical \n\n\n\n–          Sensor diversity and redundancy \n\n\n\n–          Noise reduction techniques \n\n\n\n–          Computational models of olfaction and touch \n\n\n\n–          Computational Intelligence Techniques applied to Olfaction and Tactile Data \n\n\n\n–          Analysis of biological data with computational intelligence tools. \n\n\n\n–          Psychophysics of Touch and Olfaction: Scenarios for algorithm testing. \n\n\n\n–          Benchmarking of Artificial Sensing Systems \n\n\n\n–          Robots with Olfactory/Tactile capabilities. \n\n\n\n–          Active Chemical/Mechanical Sensing \n\n\n\n–          Embedded algorithmic implementation for real-time operation. \n\n\n\nPaper submissionAll instructions and templates for submission can be found in the WCCI’10 web site (http://www.wcci2010.org/submission). SUMMARY:5th International Symposium Percepnet: Olfative Perception: Emotion\, Information and Education
DESCRIPTION:Olfactory perception: emotion\, information\, education \n\n\n\nSmell is a “door in the shadows” of our sensory system\, one channel through which information pours mind is barely able to process and less streamlined. And yet\, of that information depends largely on our health care and quality of life\, our system of preferences\, our emotions and even our social position. We have more inertia that initiatives regarding the use of olfactory perception\, and despite this\, almost no one today is how to learn to use a tool such powerful. \n\n\n\nIt’s time to learn\, reflect and discuss some of the specific properties of the olfactory system and its influence increasingly explicit in the diganosis medical\, food\, identity and consumption. \n\n\n\nTOMORROW8:00 a.m. Attendees Reception \n\n\n\nWelcome 8:15 a.m. organization Jaume Estruch\, president of SECS Josep de Haro\, Congress president PS2010 \n\n\n\n8:30 a.m. Opening Ana Isabel Pérez Neira\, vice chancellor for research Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)  \n\n\n\nDEBATE SESSION I \n\n\n\nThe processing of olfactory information using optimization mechanisms that influence learning and memory. However\, there are performances of olfactory perception beyond the identification of aromatic molecules. The sensomedicina\, a rapidly expanding discipline\, polls sensory profiles generated prematurely in the brain of patients with neurodegenerative diseases and that shows us that reality is a compromise between experience and processing capacity. \n\n\n\n9:00 a.m.: sensory receptors and SENSOMEDICINA OLFACTORY Moderator: Laura Lopez Mascaraque\, Instituto Cajal\, CSIC\, Madrid \, Pierre-Marie Lledo 9:10 a.m. Laboratory of Perception and Memory\, Pasteur Institute\, CNRS\, France “The flexible olfactory brain”Adolfo Toledano Muñoz 9:40 a.m.Fundación Hospital Alcorcón\, Madrid. Member of Spanish Olfactory Network “Role of olfaction in neurologic dysfunction (Alzheimer\, Parkinson) \n\n\n\n10:10 a.m. to 10:25 a.m. Debate \n\n\n\nSENSORY EXPERIENCE 10:25 a.m. [COFFEE] \n\n\n\nDISCUSSION SESSION II \n\n\n\nEating is a balancing act between our needs and low food availability.
