We will present the biological basis of odorant and tasting molecules by animals\, from insect to mammals\, focusing on sensory receptors. \n\n\n\nKeywords: olfaction\, taste\, receptor\, odor coding\, combinatorial code\, stimuli\, physiology \n\n\n\nLoïc Briand studied biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Nantes (France)\, where he received his PhD. He did his post-doc at the University of Glasgow (Great-Britain)\, Institute of Molecular Cell and Systems Biology. In 1999\, Loïc Briand became interested in olfaction and joined the INRA center of Jouy-en-Josas (suburb of Paris) as Research-associate in a group led by Jean-Claude Pernollet. In 2006\, Loïc Briand started is own research group at the Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour in Dijon (France)\, dealing with soluble (odorant-binding proteins\, sweet-tasting proteins and receptor proteins involved in chemical senses (olfaction and taste perception). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSophie Nicklaus (CSGA)\, Sensory evaluation of taste and olfactory sensation \n\n\n\nSummary: During the ISOEN tutorial\, she will present the main sensory evaluation methods in the analytical domain\, applied to study taste and olfactory sensations\, such as threshold testing\, discrimination tests\, sensory profile\, and temporal methods. \n\n\n\nKeywords: sensory profile\, discrimination tests\, threshold measurements\, temporal analysis \n\n\n\nSophie Nicklaus\, PhD is a Research Director at INRA (French National Institute of Agricultural Research)\, in the Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l’Alimentation (Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour) in Dijon\, France. She received her PhD in Food Science from the University of Burgundy (Dijon\, France). She started her career managing a sensory evaluation plateform\, applying the main sensory evaluation methods (sensory profile\, discrimination tests\, hedonic and consumer tests). She has been studying children’s eating behaviour for the past 15 years\, looking at the role of food-related inputs (sensory properties\, energy density) in the development and evolution of infants and children’s liking and food intake\, using experimental and epidemiological approaches (OPALINE and ELFE cohort). She is in particular interested in understanding the impact of early eating experiences on later eating behavior\, and their contribution to health. She serves as a member for several scientific committees; and is an expert with the French Ministry of Health for the National Program on Nutrition and Health (“PNNS”). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThierry Thomas-Danguin (CSGA)\, Perceptual interactions: the strategy of the senses to process complex signals \n\n\n\nSummary: This lecture presents the nature and mechanisms of perceptual interactions within the olfactory system and between the chemical senses. In a first part\, the theoretical aspects of odor mixtures interactions are covered and examples from both human and animal studies are provided to support theory. It discusses the issue of odor mixtures interactions in the context of aroma/odor analysis. In a second part\, cross-modal interactions are reviewed and the emphasis is made on how sensory integration constitutes a key process in complex food flavor perception. \n\n\n\nKeywords: odor\, flavor\, mixture\, smell-taste interactions\, sensory integration\, perception\, psychophysics \n\n\n\nThierry Thomas-Danguin\, PhD\, is research fellow at INRA the French National Institute for Agricultural Research. He works at the CSGA (Centre for Taste and Feeding Behavior) in Dijon. He has a background in chemistry\, psychophysics\, psychophysiology of the chemical senses and sensory sciences. He has been studying odor mixtures for 20 years and authored over 40 scientific papers. He performs research on the perception of complex chemical stimuli released from food and on cross-modal interactions within the chemical senses\, while trying to decipher the chemical and biological mechanisms underpinning food flavor perception. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnne-Claude Romain (Ulg)\, Environmental odour Assessment \n\n\n\nSummary: Malodours emitted by industrial\, agricultural\, service activities and solid/liquid waste treatments are responsible for most of the complaints in the environment in our civilised countries. This pollution is a major concern for local authorities but the assessment of this pollution is a real challenge. This lecture presents the different methods of sampling and the sensorial measurements usually employed to assess these “environmental” odours. The quantification units (ou/m³\, SU\, percentile…) are explained. Laboratory but also in-field techniques combined with air dispersion models without forgetting the neighbours surveys are exposed. To conclude\, a discussion on the uncertainties of the different approaches is proposed to the participants. \n\n\n\nKeywords: odour pollution; environmental annoyance; sampling; dynamic olfactometry; in-field malodour measurement; air dispersion modelling \n\n\n\nAnne-Claude Romain studied chemistry and environmental sciences at the University of Liège (ULg\, Belgium)\, and obtained a PhD on the use of sensor arrays for environmental malodour monitoring. Currently\, she is the leader of the research group ”Sensing of Atmospheres and Monitoring” (SAM) at the Faculty of Sciences and is cofounder of the spin-off Odometric. Associate professor at ULg\, she gives lectures on atmospheric pollution\, odour annoyance characterization\, indoor air quality\, environmental metrology and data treatment. Odour pollution and indoor air quality are her main areas of interest to develop new methods of monitoring. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean-Luc Le Quéré (CSGA)\, Lectures 1 & 2 \n\n\n\nLecture 1 : Sample preparation and identification of volatile compounds \n\n\n\nSummary :Due to their physicochemical properties aroma compounds are amenable to instrumental analysis only if they are separated from the food matrix by a suitable extraction procedure. However\, as no single method yields a “true” picture of a food aroma\, complete identification of flavour volatiles is rarely attained with a single sample preparation. In this talk\, before presenting the methods of identification chiefly based on GC-MS\, we will present the various techniques available for sample treatment and flavour extraction. \n\n\n\nLecture 2 : On-line and global measurements of aromas \n\n\n\nSummary : Perception of flavour is a dynamic process as flavour molecules are released progressively from food during consumption. The methods currently used to evaluate food flavour are still essentially based on sensory evaluation by panels of experts. In this talk\, we will present the latest developments made for relating sensory measurements to flavour release ( in vitro and in vivo applications) and for substituting instruments for humans to globally assess food flavour more quickly and at reduced costs. The presentation will emphasize the use of atmospheric ionization mass spectrometric techniques. \n\n\n\nKeywords : GC-MS\, GC-O\, API-MS\, PTR-MS\, extraction\, sample pretreatment \n\n\n\nJean-Luc Le Quéré received a PhD degree in chemistry from the University of Western Brittany in Brest (F) in 1982. He did a post-doctoral stay at the University of Glasgow (UK) in the department of chemistry. He joined the Aroma Research Laboratory of INRA in Dijon as an analytical chemist in 1983 and specialized in the analyses of aroma molecules using spectrometric methods: NMR\, Fourier transform infrared and more particularly mass spectrometry. Now with the Centre for Taste and Feeding Behaviour\, he is in charge of methods development dealing with in vitro and in vivo flavour release using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) and proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElisabeth Guichard (CSGA)\, Identification of key odorant compounds by GC-O followed by recombination studies \n\n\n\nSummary: This lecture will present the different methods currently used to identify the key odorant compounds from food by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) and select the most pertinent based on quantification of their impact on odour intensity. As GC-O only allows to evaluate the individual compounds after their chroamtographic elution\, there is thus a need to evaluate their impact in mixture thanks to recombination studies. We will present different strategies used to test these miwtures of odorants in comparison with the real food sample. \n\n\n\nKeywords: aroma\, gas chromatography\, olfactometry\, mixture of odorants\, recombination\, similarity \n\n\n\nElisabeth Guichard is an engineer from National Institute of Agronomy (INAPG\, France) specialised in physicochemistry\, and obtained a PhD in Agronomic sciences on the raspberry aroma in 1983. She has been recruited at INRA in 1979 as Research Assistant and is now Research Director in CSGA (Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour) at INRA (Dijon\, France). She is co-leader of a research group on “molecular interactions\, in-mouth mechanisms and flavour perception”.She has more than 150 publications in peer review international journals and more than 260 presentations in congress (80 oral communications) in the field of food science\, interactions between aroma compounds and food matrix\, in-mouth aroma release in relation with perception. She has been editor of 6 books and author of 44 book chapters.

SUMMARY:4th GOSPEL Workshop on Gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides
DESCRIPTION:Basic under-standing & applications\n\n\n\n7-9 June 2015\, Tübingen\, Germany\n\n\n\nThe workshop is the fourth in a series of Gospel workshops (http://www.gospel-network.org) dedicated to the R&D activities in the field of semiconducting metal oxide based gas sensors. It will be organized by the Universities of Kyushu and Tübingen\, over two full days – 8th and 9th of June – and will be preceded by a social\, come-together event on the 7th of June. \n\n\n\nThe previous three workshops demonstrated that the idea to bring together experts from both academia and industry and provide plenty of time for discussions was very fruitful. Therefore\,also this edition will keep the very successful format of combining 2 key notes (each 40 min + 20 min discussion) and 4 invited talks (each 25 min and 10 min discussion) with regular oral contributions (each 15 min and 5 min discussion) and poster presentations. As usual\, we areready to host an exhibition for companies active in the field. At the workshop we will also discuss the opportunity of transforming it in a biennial conference run by a Steering Committee that will take place alternately in Asia and Europe. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe workshop will take place in Tübingen\, Germany in the “Hotel Stadt Tübingen”. For details about the hotel\, please have a look at: http://www.hotel-stadt-tuebingen.de/. The hotel offers excellent conference facilities.Tübingen is extremely easy to reach from the Stuttgart Airport (25 minutes drive)\, which is connected with all major European airports. \n\n\n\nParticipation\n\n\n\nThe attendance is limited to a maximum of 75 participants. In the case in which the demand will be higher\, the selection – for non-authors – will be made on a first came\, first served basis. The conference fee is expected to be around 400€ and besides the attendance of the scientific sessions will also cover participation to the social events\, coffee breaks and lunch during the workshop. \n\n\n\nFurther information:\n\n\n\nYou can email gssmo2015@ipc.uni-tuebingen.de with any queries about logistics or the workshop organizers for enquiries about the programme and content and suggestions. \n\n\n\nThe workshop website is now online. SUMMARY:Monitoring Ambient Air 2014
DESCRIPTION:Air Quality in Europe – New ChallengesConference with Posters & Exhibition\n\n\n\nDecember 9-10\, 2014\, London\, UK\n\n\n\nIn several European countries\, air quality made headline news this year in a way that has not been seen for decades. While the regulation of emissions\, and our understanding of the sources and mechanisms involved in air quality move forwards\, the overall situation may not\, as control in some areas is counterbalanced by uncontrolled developments in others. Following last year’s successful liaison with Defra’s Air Quality Expert Group\, there will be overview presentations on topics currently being reviewed by that group. They concern pollution sources that are either relatively new\, or that have not received the attention that they merit: shipping\, biomass burning and shale gas extraction (often called “fracking”)\, and also an assessment of the evidence for photocatalytic paints as a means to reduce NOx concentrations. In addition\, there will be an update on the EU funded CARBOTRAF project and a session focused on black carbon and other air pollution emissions from traffic. The meeting will also include a session on advances in air quality measurement; an on-going theme of this conference series. \n\n\n\nOrganised by the Automation and Analytical Management Group – Royal Society of Chemistry \n\n\n\nFor more information please go to: aamg-rsc.org \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nCheck the agenda and further information

SUMMARY:International School of Physics and Technology of Matter
DESCRIPTION:Towards new frontiers of Smart Sensing and Integration: Materials\, Technologies and Applications \n\n\n\nSmart Sensing and Smart Systems Integration are currently witnessing a tremendous boost which arises both from the need for better understanding of fundamental phenomena and from the quest of applications in emerging and future technologies\, where products will incorporate functions of sensing\, actuation and control and will be capable of describing and analyzing a situation\, and taking decisions based on the available data in a predictive or adaptive manner\, thereby performing smart actions. In most cases the “smartness” of the system can be attributed to autonomous operation based on closed loop control\, energy efficiency and networking capabilities. \n\n\n\nSmart Sensing and Smart Integration combine materials\, technologies and components from Microsystems technology (miniaturized electric\, mechanical\, optical and fluidic devices) with knowledge\, technology and functionality from other disciplines like physics\, biology\, chemistry\, nano-sciences or cognitive sciences. Then integration of micro- and nano-technologies along the line connecting the nano-\, micro- and macro-worlds is the future of technology with a clear convergence towards Micro/Nano/Bio/ICT and with real applications into an industrial context when emphasizing the combination of components with the aim of merging their functional and technical abilities into an interoperable system. \n\n\n\nThe School is thought to give a perspective on some of both fundamental and new frontiers activities in the fields of materials science\, technological processes\, sensors and devices\, industrial applications with an emphasis on their connections. The consequences and impact of sensing and integration will be analyzed in several different contexts. \n\n\n\nAIMS OF THE SCHOOL ARE:\n\n\n\n(1) To broaden and deepen the background knowledge of young researchers\, early-career scientists\, PhD students and post-docs\, in the general areas of materials\, sensors and multifunctional devices\, transduction methods\, micro/nano technologies\, miniaturization and functionalization\,  advanced processing and packaging\, wereable and portable devices\, applications\, etc.\, through a series of advanced lectures given by well recognized experts in these fields. \n\n\n\n(2) To provide a perspective of the latest research and new frontier trends in these areas. \n\n\n\nThe schedule of the School is intensive with a rich program including formal lectures and discussion sessions\, including a session for young researchers poster presentation. Some social events will help to create a stimulating and friendly atmosphere for interaction and learning. The daily program typically runs from 09.00-13.00 and from 17.00-20.00\, with afternoon sessions being a combination of non-lecture activities\, seminars and poster discussions.

SUMMARY:1st International Workshop on Odor Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Chemical Space – Sensory Space – Perceptual Space – Artificial Olfaction\n\n\n\n4-7 September 2013 – Herrenhausen Palace\, Hannover\, Germany\n\n\n\nThe sense of smell plays an important role in everyday life\, for example in food\, beverages\, perfume and hygiene. For many animals the sense of smell is their primary sense to experience their world. But still\, we have no clear understanding of how odors are perceived. Moreover\, while we readily understand how to describe visual stimuli with light wavelengths and contrast\, or sounds with frequency and amplitude\, we lack understanding of the fundamental features of odors. In other words\, we don’t understand Odor Space. The notion odor space describes different aspects of the sense of smell. There is chemical space\, in which odorants (chemicals that evoke an odor) are arranged along their physico-chemical properties. The encoding of odors into neuronal responses defines the sensory space. The perceptual organization and meaning of odors is the basis for perception space. Finally\, odors are embedded in a physical space that governs how odorants move from their sources to our noses.Understanding how these aspects of odor space relate to each other is crucial to advance our knowledge on olfaction\, which is essential for research and development the food and perfume industry. Odor space knowledge is also key to developing artificial noses and prosthetics. Unraveling the meaning of odor space requires integrating many different disciplines all part of a rapidly growing research community\, including biochemistry\, molecular genetics\, neuroscience\, psychology\, physics\, engineering and computer science. The aim of the 1st International Workshop on Odorspaces is to bring together leading scientists and young researchers to jointly tackle the huge tasks to create a unifying perspective on Odor Spaces. We will mix data presentations by young researchers with big-picture accounts by senior experts in the field. A large part of the symposium is devoted to discussion to develop new and meaningful insights into the chemical sense. \n\n\n\nFurther information is available at: www.odorspaces2013.org

SUMMARY:4th Gospel Workshop: Gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides
DESCRIPTION:Gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides: basic understanding & applications\n\n\n\n6-7 June 2011 – Tübingen\, Germany\n\n\n\nPlease register at: www.gospel-network.org \n\n\n\nWorkshop organizers:\n\n\n\nNicolae Barsan(1)\, Kengo Shimanoe(2) and Udo Weimar(1) \n\n\n\n1. University of Tübingen\, Germany;   2. – Kyushu University\, Japan \n\n\n\nTentative list of invited speakers:\n\n\n\nProf. Ulrike Diebold\, TU Wien\, Austria Surface structure and reactivity of transparent conducting oxidesDr. Kiyoshi Fukui\, New Cosmos Electric\, Japan Practical type gas sensors based on sintered metal oxide semiconductors for detection of hydrogen and odorProf. Jan-Dierk Grunwaldt\, KIT\, Germany Shining light on metal oxide based gas sensor: Operando synchrotron radiation experimentsProf. Vincenzo Guidi\, University of Ferrara\, Italy Classical and semiclassical approaches for determination of the intergranular energy barrier height in metal-oxide nanograinsDr. Tateo Hyodo/Prof. Yasuhiro Shimizu\, Nagasaki University\, Japan Microstructural design of gas-sensing materials by utilizing various templatesProf. Jong-Heun Lee\, Korea University\, Korea Gas sensors using oxide nanowire networksDr. Ichiro Matsubara\, AIST\, Japan Inorganic-organic hybrid materials for gas sensorsProf. Emeritus Noboru Yamazoe\, Kyushu University\, Japan Gas reception and transduction in oxide semiconductor gas sensorMr. Kenichi Yoshioka\, Figaro Engineering\, Japan CH4 sensor using MEMS technology for battery operation\n\n\n\nThe workshop is the fourth in a series of Gospel workshops (www.gospel-network.org) and will be organized by the International Society for Olfaction and Chemical Sensing. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for a thorough discussion among experts on the most important developments in the field of semiconducting metal oxide based gas sensors. We aim to bring together academia and industry and help the latter identify which of the new developments are the most relevant to it. Now\, after decades of R&D effort\, we see that gas sensors are used in a host of applications\, that companies are commercializing millions of devices each year and that the number of related publications is increasing. But there is also the feeling that many fundamental issues are still poorly understood and that we need breakthroughs in both technology and basic understanding to be able to bring about new advancements in the field. After very much looking to technological aspects in the third workshop\, we feel that there is now the right time to have a look at the advancements in the basic understanding of sensing and to new application fields. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will start on the 6th of June\, in the morning and will end in the evening of the 7th of June; the registration and a come together social event will take place on the 5th of June. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe workshop will take place in Tübingen\, Germany in the “Hotel Stadt Tübingen”. For details about the hotel\, please have a look at: www.hotel-stadt-tuebingen.de. The hotel offers excellent conference facilities. \n\n\n\nTübingen is extremely easy to reach from the Stuttgart Airport (25 minutes drive)\, which is connected with all major European airports. \n\n\n\nParticipation\n\n\n\nThe attendance is limited to a maximum of 75 participants. In the case in which the demand will be higher\, the selection – for non-authors – will be made on a first came\, first served basis. \n\n\n\nCosts & Hotel arrangement\n\n\n\nThe workshop participation fee is 420€ (for ISOCS members 390€). It includes lunch and coffee breaks on both days and dinner on the 6th of June. We already booked a number of hotel rooms for three nights (the 5th\, 6th and the 7th of June) at a very good price (77€ or 85€ incl. breakfast) at Hotel Stadt Tuebingen. Reservations to be made until the 8th of May directly by fax +49 7071 38245 or email info@hotel-stadt-tuebingen.de\, reference GOSPEL Workshop. \n\n\n\nMembersNon-membersParticipation fee390 €420 €\n\n\n\nHotel room77 €85 € (incl. breakfast)\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegistration and abstract submission\n\n\n\nTwo-page abstracts should be submitted until the 1st of May\, 2011; please use the online form! The confirmation of acceptance will be provided until the 15th of May\, 2011. The registration is open until the 20th of May 2011. \n\n\n\nFurther information:\n\n\n\nYou can email gssmo2011@ipc.uni-tuebingen.de with any queries about logistics or the workshop organizers for enquiries about the programme and content. \n\n\n\nMore informtion can be found at www.gospel-network.org \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDownload announcement
