Topics will be delivered by lectures\, discussion\, practical demonstration sessions and hands-on activities. Participants will need to bring their own laptops to work on the proposed exercises. Sample data and evaluation software will be shared with the attendees.PhD students and other interested attendees will be offered to present their current research in a poster session on Friday.The Short Course includes accommodation and the programme allows plenty of opportunities for interaction with lecturers and attendees. Theoretical lectures will take place in the morning\, with the afternoon free for participants to network\, consolidate their knowledge while enjoying the outdoors and the skiing. Practical sessions\, exercises\, hands-on demonstrations will be in the early evening\, before dinner. The venue is the superb Hotel Vallechiara\, located directly at the ski slopes\, and the participation fees (to be communicated soon) include accommodation and meals. Participants will receive free ISOCS membership for 2025. Accompanying persons are also welcome.The hotel has also a ski school (Anzi Ski School) and a ski rental\, and they will organize ski courses at different levels (from beginners to experts) for the Short Course attendees. \n\n\n\n\nRegistration is open and tickets for the event covering access and accommodation with 3 meals per day from Sunday 2nd to Friday 7th (5 nights) can directly be purchased below. Exercises and practical demonstrations on biomedical applications of chemical sensing will deliver unique hands-on experience. \n\n\n\nThe Short Course explores the areas of chemical sensing (including chemical analysis and e-nose approaches) and relevant data processing applied to the development of biomedical technologies and/or diagnostic devices\, focusing specifically on the technological\, clinical and regulatory/certification aspects to be considered when developing a proof of concept (TRL 3) or laboratory-validated methodology (TRL 4) towards a medical device. \n\n\n\nWe put together a unique and exciting program that will provide attendees with both theoretical background and practical experience in the above areas. Topics will be delivered by lectures\, discussion\, practical demonstration sessions and hands-on activities. The Short Course will include a team project activity during which the participants will be challenged to define how they should approach the planning of activities for scientific and clinical validation of an innovative medical device based on chemical sensing\, to make them facing with the topics presented during the course in a simulated real-case scenario. The results of the projects will be presented by each group on the last day of the course. Participants will need to bring their own laptops\, but will be supplied with sample data and evaluation software. The computing laboratories do not need a high-performance computer and can be carried out on a basic laptop running the windows operating system. \n\n\n\nThe Short Course is residential and the programme allows plenty of opportunites for networking with lecturers and attendees. Theoretical lectures will start on Monday 15th and take place in the morning\, with the afternoon free for participants to network\, consolidate their knowledge while enjoying the outdoors and the skiing. DESCRIPTION:ISOCS & MiNaB-ICT\n\n\n\nJoint Event on Sensing for Smart Anything Everywhere: Materials\, Technologies\, Applications\n\n\n\n25-29 June 2016 – Otranto (Lecce)\, Italy\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the interest and the success of 2015 edition of MiNaB-ICT (Micro-Nano-Bio-ICT convergence)\, in 2016 a Joint event with The International Society on Olfaction and Chemical Sensing (ISOCS) will be organised\, focussing the attention on Sensing for the emerging world of “Smart Anything Everywhere”. In this context\, Sensors and Smart Systems devices that provide particular intelligent functionality by combining micro/nanoelectronic components with physical\, chemical\, and biological sensors and actuators on fully integrated systems\, will catalyse increasing technology development for a broad range of powerful applications addressing societal challenges.These rapid technological developments have contributed to the growth in many areas of the research (health\, food\, environment\, etc.) where they can bring significant impact. Moreover\, the inclusion of sensors on smart systems that combine many functionalities with the ubiquitously sharing of information through networks is also receiving particular attention. However\, in order to take full advantage of current technologies\, greater effort is needed to improve the link between Sensors & Smart Systems in a new concepts of Information Communication Technology. The full integration with ICT data processing to be combined with sensing\, reasoning\, actuating and communication and will allow analysis of complex situations\, to take autonomous decisions\, to interact with the environment and with other “intelligent” systems. \n\n\n\nThe event will consist of a Scientific Workshop in the days 27-29 June and a Tutorial Course in the days 25-26 June.The objective of the workshop is twofold: a) to share the progress in the field and b) to identify the technological orientation and future challenges\, offered by the connection between Sensors and ICT technologies\, looking at the world of “Smart Anything Everywhere”\, starting from basic materials and technologies for sensors and looking towards integration and applications. In 1999\, Loïc Briand became interested in olfaction and joined the INRA center of Jouy-en-Josas (suburb of Paris) as Research-associate in a group led by Jean-Claude Pernollet.In 2006\, Loïc Briand started is own research group at the Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour in Dijon (France)\, dealing with soluble (odorant-binding proteins\, sweet-tasting proteins and receptor proteins involved in chemical senses (olfaction and taste perception). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSophie Nicklaus (CSGA)\, Sensory evaluation of taste and olfactory sensation \n\n\n\nSummary: During the ISOEN tutorial\, she will present the main sensory evaluation methods in the analytical domain\, applied to study taste and olfactory sensations\, such as threshold testing\, discrimination tests\, sensory profile\, and temporal methods. \n\n\n\nKeywords: sensory profile\, discrimination tests\, threshold measurements\, temporal analysis \n\n\n\nSophie Nicklaus\, PhD is a Research Director at INRA (French National Institute of Agricultural Research)\, in the Centre des Sciences du Goût et de l’Alimentation (Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour) in Dijon\, France. In a first part\, the theoretical aspects of odor mixtures interactions are covered and examples from both human and animal studies are provided to support theory. It discusses the issue of odor mixtures interactions in the context of aroma/odor analysis. In a second part\, cross-modal interactions are reviewed and the emphasis is made on how sensory integration constitutes a key process in complex food flavor perception. \n\n\n\nKeywords: odor\, flavor\, mixture\, smell-taste interactions\, sensory integration\, perception\, psychophysics \n\n\n\nThierry Thomas-Danguin\, PhD\, is research fellow at INRA the French National Institute for Agricultural Research. This pollution is a major concern for local authorities but the assessment of this pollution is a real challenge. This lecture presents the different methods of sampling and the sensorial measurements usually employed to assess these “environmental” odours. The quantification units (ou/m³\, SU\, percentile…) are explained. Laboratory but also in-field techniques combined with air dispersion models without forgetting the neighbours surveys are exposed. To conclude\, a discussion on the uncertainties of the different approaches is proposed to the participants. \n\n\n\nKeywords: odour pollution; environmental annoyance; sampling; dynamic olfactometry; in-field malodour measurement; air dispersion modelling \n\n\n\nAnne-Claude Romain studied chemistry and environmental sciences at the University of Liège (ULg\, Belgium)\, and obtained a PhD on the use of sensor arrays for environmental malodour monitoring. Odour pollution and indoor air quality are her main areas of interest to develop new methods of monitoring. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean-Luc Le Quéré (CSGA)\, Lectures 1 & 2 \n\n\n\nLecture 1 : Sample preparation and identification of volatile compounds \n\n\n\nSummary :Due to their physicochemical properties aroma compounds are amenable to instrumental analysis only if they are separated from the food matrix by a suitable extraction procedure. However\, as no single method yields a “true” picture of a food aroma\, complete identification of flavour volatiles is rarely attained with a single sample preparation.In this talk\, before presenting the methods of identification chiefly based on GC-MS\, we will present the various techniques available for sample treatment and flavour extraction. \n\n\n\nLecture 2 : On-line and global measurements of aromas \n\n\n\nSummary : Perception of flavour is a dynamic process as flavour molecules are released progressively from food during consumption. The methods currently used to evaluate food flavour are still essentially based on sensory evaluation by panels of experts.In this talk\, we will present the latest developments made for relating sensory measurements to flavour release ( in vitro and in vivo applications) and for substituting instruments for humans to globally assess food flavour more quickly and at reduced costs. The presentation will emphasize the use of atmospheric ionization mass spectrometric techniques. \n\n\n\nKeywords : GC-MS\, GC-O\, API-MS\, PTR-MS\, extraction\, sample pretreatment \n\n\n\nJean-Luc Le Quéré received a PhD degree in chemistry from the University of Western Brittany in Brest (F) in 1982. He did a post-doctoral stay at the University of Glasgow (UK) in the department of chemistry.He joined the Aroma Research Laboratory of INRA in Dijon as an analytical chemist in 1983 and specialized in the analyses of aroma molecules using spectrometric methods: NMR\, Fourier transform infrared and more particularly mass spectrometry. Now with the Centre for Taste and Feeding Behaviour\, he is in charge of methods development dealing with in vitro and in vivo flavour release using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) and proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nElisabeth Guichard (CSGA)\, Identification of key odorant compounds by GC-O followed by recombination studies \n\n\n\nSummary: This lecture will present the different methods currently used to identify the key odorant compounds from food by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) and select the most pertinent based on quantification of their impact on odour intensity. As GC-O only allows to evaluate the individual compounds after their chroamtographic elution\, there is thus a need to evaluate their impact in mixture thanks to recombination studies. We will present different strategies used to test these miwtures of odorants in comparison with the real food sample. \n\n\n\nKeywords: aroma\, gas chromatography\, olfactometry\, mixture of odorants\, recombination\, similarity \n\n\n\nElisabeth Guichard is an engineer from National Institute of Agronomy (INAPG\, France) specialised in physicochemistry\, and obtained a PhD in Agronomic sciences on the raspberry aroma in 1983. She has been recruited at INRA in 1979 as Research Assistant and is now Research Director in CSGA (Center for Taste and Feeding Behaviour) at INRA (Dijon\, France). She is co-leader of a research group on “molecular interactions\, in-mouth mechanisms and flavour perception”.She has more than 150 publications in peer review international journals and more than 260 presentations in congress (80 oral communications) in the field of food science\, interactions between aroma compounds and food matrix\, in-mouth aroma release in relation with perception. She has been editor of 6 books and author of 44 book chapters.

SUMMARY:4th GOSPEL Workshop on Gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides
DESCRIPTION:Basic under-standing & applications\n\n\n\n7-9 June 2015\, Tübingen\, Germany\n\n\n\nThe workshop is the fourth in a series of Gospel workshops (http://www.gospel-network.org) dedicated to the R&D activities in the field of semiconducting metal oxide based gas sensors.It will be organized by the Universities of Kyushu and Tübingen\, over two full days – 8th and 9th of June – and will be preceded by a social\, come-together event on the 7th of June. \n\n\n\nThe previous three workshops demonstrated that the idea to bring together experts from both academia and industry and provide plenty of time for discussions was very fruitful. Therefore\,also this edition will keep the very successful format of combining 2 key notes (each 40 min + 20 min discussion) and 4 invited talks (each 25 min and 10 min discussion) with regular oral contributions (each 15 min and 5 min discussion) and poster presentations. As usual\, we areready to host an exhibition for companies active in the field.At the workshop we will also discuss the opportunity of transforming it in a biennial conference run by a Steering Committee that will take place alternately in Asia and Europe. \n\n\n\nLocation\n\n\n\nThe workshop will take place in Tübingen\, Germany in the “Hotel Stadt Tübingen”. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Haick Hossam (Technion – IIT) has designed\, developed\, and will deliver a massive open online course (MOOC) on “Nanotechnology and Nanosensors .”MOOC is a web-based course designed to support a large number of participants. MOOCs are online distance education\, providing free and accessible high-quality education to the masses. Contrary to traditional courses\, MOOCs allow open and free registration to any non-credit participants. SUMMARY:Monitoring Ambient Air 2014
DESCRIPTION:Air Quality in Europe – New ChallengesConference with Posters & Exhibition\n\n\n\nDecember 9-10\, 2014\, London\, UK\n\n\n\nIn several European countries\, air quality made headline news this year in a way that has not been seen for decades. While the regulation of emissions\, and our understanding of the sources and mechanisms involved in air quality move forwards\, the overall situation may not\, as control in some areas is counterbalanced by uncontrolled developments in others. Following last year’s successful liaison with Defra’s Air Quality Expert Group\, there will be overview presentations on topics currently being reviewed by that group. They concern pollution sources that are either relatively new\, or that have not received the attention that they merit: shipping\, biomass burning and shale gas extraction (often called “fracking”)\, and also an assessment of the evidence for photocatalytic paints as a means to reduce NOx concentrations. In addition\, there will be an update on the EU funded CARBOTRAF project and a session focused on black carbon and other air pollution emissions from traffic.
